Ang Mo Kio Singaporean Hawker Cuisine

Note: This restaurant is already closed.

Singaporean cuisine has always got my curiosity. Its diversity can be likened to Filipino cuisine, which is also a mix of cultural influences. Singaporean cuisine is greatly influenced by Chinese, Malay, and Indian cuisine, making Singapore a food mecca.

I first saw Ang Mo Kio at the Podium while dining at Shi Lin a few months ago. It was still on its soft opening back then so I made a mental note to try it when I get the chance.

Ang Mo Kio is named after a district in Singapore, which is Hokkien for "red tomato". The interiors of the restaurant are designed to resemble the hawker centers in Singapore with a modern feel. Customers can view the kitchen from their seats.

Before we started our dinner, we were offered some drinks. We were advised to try their specialty drinks, which we did. My fellow foodies got Rose Milk Tea (Php 70), Barley (Php 65), Teh Tarik (Php 70), and Milo Dinosaur (Php 75) while I got Milo Godzilla (Php 95). The only difference of Milo Godzilla from Milo Dinosaur is the vanilla ice cream on top, but the ice cream is so creamy it's worth the additional Php 20.

Teh Tarik (which means "pulled tea") is a hot Indian milk tea drink Ang Mo Kio also serves fresh fruit juices, shakes, and other premium beers.

To start our meal, we were served the Roti Prata (Php 95 for 2 pieces).

Roti Prata

Roti Prata means "flatbread", it's a traditional Indian bread, served with a curry dip. The curry dip is a little spicy, but it blends well with the Roti Prata.

Vegetables

For vegetables, we got Sambal Chinese Kangkong (Php 168) and Sambal Eggplant (Php 168)

Sambal Chinese Kangkong
Sambal Eggplant

Sambal is a sweet and spicy sauce, quite similar to bagoong or shrimp paste. I wasn't able to try it since it was very spicy.

Noodles

For noodles, we had Hokkien Prawn Mee (Php 275 for single, Php 550 for 2-3 persons) and Char Kway Teow (Php 220 for single, Php 480 for 2-3 persons).

Hokkien Prawn Mee
Char Kway Teow

Hokkien Prawn Mee has yellow wheat noodles, vermicelli, bean sprouts, prawns, eggs, sliced sorting, and pork belly slices. Char Kway Teow is made from flat rice noodles with dark soy sauce, whole prawns and bean sprouts. Their Char Kway Teow is less sweet compared to the ones I had at Nasi Lemak, I could say that I liked the Ang Mo Kio version better.

Seafood

Ang Mo Kio has a vast menu for seafood items, and we got to try the bestsellers.

We were served the Oyster Omelette (Php 168), Cereal Prawns (Php 628), and the Laksa (Php 308).

Oyster Omelette
Cereal Prawns
Laksa

You can get the Oyster Omelette in two styles -- Or-Jian or Or-luak. Or-Jian style is where oysters are slightly fried, each coated with a crispy egg layer while Or-luak style is where oysters are used as fillings for the egg omelet. I think we were served the Or-luak style.

Cereal Prawn is prawns in batter with grain oat flakes, chili slices, and fresh curry leaves. I was kinda hesitant to try it at first, but it was really good! It would be better if you'll use your hands in eating this one.

Of course, who wouldn't miss the Laksa? Laksa is a signature dish with seafood ingredients like cockles, prawns, and fish cake, with coconut milk. It was really spicy! Though I'd love to eat this piping hot.

Chicken

I love chicken dishes, and I indulged myself with the following chicken dishes: Chicken Wings (Php 45 per piece, minimum of 3 pcs), Chicken Satay (Php 35 per piece, minimum of 3 pcs) and Hainanese Chicken.

Chicken Wings
Chicken Satay
The Chicken Wings have this sweet and tangy bbq sauce that I really liked. I lost count on how many pieces I managed to eat. The Chicken Satay was really delicious too! With the peanut dipping sauce, it is really something to look forward to. Both dishes are best partnered with Nasi Lemak or rice cooked in coconut milk (Php 55 per serving).

The only dish I was really excited to try is the Hainanese Chicken. I'm always on the lookout for the best version. Their Hainanese Chicken is available in different serving sizes:

Hainanese or Roasted Chicken with rice - Php 248
Hainanese or Roasted Chicken with rice & vegetables - Php 298
Half Hainanese or Roasted Chicken with 2 rice - Php 448
Half Hainanese or Roasted Chicken  with 2 rice & vegetables - Php 558
Whole Hainanese or Roasted Chicken  with 4 Rice & vegetables - Php 998
Hainanese or Roasted Chicken Quarter Chicken only - Php 250

Hainanese Chicken

Their Hainanese Chicken was juicy and flavorful. I could say that it's one of the best I've ever tried. I'd go back just for this.

Pork & Beef

For meat dishes, we had Bak Ku Teh (Php 285 for single, Php 558 for big serving) and Beef Rendang (Php 218 for single, Php 258 with Nasi Lemak, Php 436 for big serving).

Bak Ku Teh
Beef Rendang

Bak Ku Teh is known as pork rib soup. It was not as flavorful compared to the other dishes we had, but the meat falling off the bone is just too irresistible. The Beef Rendang was a contrast, with lots of spices and coconut milk. The meat was tender, and it was oh-so-good!

Ang Mo Kio also serves dessert, but we were too full to have some. Ang Mo Kio Singapore Hawker Cuisine is a place you should try for the authentic Singaporean food experience. I'd definitely bring my friends here for another round of serious Singaporean food tripping. :)

  4. What a nice interior, simple but chic. The drinks are really unique, I would love to try one of those especially the barley juice, but knowing me I'd probably order the milo godzilla or dinosaur.

The Hokkien Prawn Mee looks yummy so is the oyster omelette. I think this makes for an ultimate food adventure; the foods are nothing like I've heard before.

  8. I liked the Char Kway Teow... I wish they'd get a wider straw for the barley juice because the grains can hardly fit in their current straw. :)
