A few weeks ago, I had dinner with my foodie friends at the newly-opened tonkatsu restaurant from Japan: Maisen Tonkatsu in SM Megamall.
This branch was officially opened last October but the first branch in Greenbelt has been open earlier this year.
Unlike other tonkatsu restaurants in Manila, Maisen has bar tables for solo diners.
On each table are two salad dressings (sesame and vinaigrette), two katsu sauce (sweet and spicy), and spiced salt.
Each katsu set has unlimited rice, miso soup, cabbage, pickles, and fruits.
My order is the Mixed Katsu Set (Php 495).

The Mixed Katsu Set has two mini-tenderloin, prawn katsu, and two potato croquettes.
My friends' orders are Chicken Katsu Don Set (Php 385) and Salmon Katsu Set (Php 550).

We were impressed by how huge our orders are, especially with the Salmon Katsu Set.
I would have appreciated if my katsu were already sliced upon serving, however, the tenderloin katsu was so tender I didn't have a hard time biting through it. I found the potato croquettes too oily. I also loved the chicken and salmon katsu.
I liked the sweet katsu sauce but I wasn't able to try the spicy sauce.
Maisen also serves katsu sandwiches, sukiyaki, katsu curry sets, and many more.
It was a satisfactory experience for us in Maisen. The food was impressive and reasonably-priced. However, the service needs improvement as they are going head-to-head with a tonkatsu restaurant known for their top-notch service.
Still, I would love to go back and try the Katsumabushi Set next time.
