Boon Tong Kee at Tomas Morato

Note: This location is already closed.

Ever since few of my good friends relocated to Singapore for work, I got more curious about Singaporean cuisine. Singaporean food is mainly influenced by the Chinese, Malay and Indian cuisines, which makes it more interesting. Though I have yet to fly to Singapore, I am fortunate to try Boon Tong Kee, which is now in Manila.

Boon Tong Kee is one of the popular restaurants in Singapore. Philippines is the first country to have its franchise. It currently has three locations: SM Mall of Asia, Powerplant Mall and Tomas Morato.

The Tomas Morato branch is very spacious, with booth tables for small groups and round tables for large groups. Ms. Joy Rodriguez, one of the owners, noted that they patterned the interious of all the Manila branches from the main branch in Singapore.

Appetizers

For appetizers, we were served pickled vegetables, Crispy Beancurd (Php 185), and Prawn Toast (Php 275).

The Crispy Beancurd is served with green tea mayo while the Prawn Toast is topped with some green tea mayo too. I liked that both dishes are light and simple.

We also had Poached Chinese Spinach with Assorted Eggs (Php 295), Braised Pork Belly served with Bun (Php 325) and Fried Sambal Kangkong with Squid (Php 295).

The Poached Chinese Spinach has three kinds of eggs: chicken egg, salted duck egg and century egg. I love eggs, and I love this soup! :)

The Braised Pork Belly is sweet and tender. Our group loved this dish that we asked for more buns. The Fried Sambal Kangkong wasn't as spicy as I expected, a little more sambal might do the trick.

Main Dishes

Of course, we wouldn't miss on trying the chicken. We both had the Signature Boiled Chicken (Php 845 for whole, Php 455 for half, Php 245 for quarter) and Crispy Roast Chicken (Php 755 for whole, Php 425 for half, Php 235 for quarter), served with pyramid-shaped Chicken Rice (Php 65).

The Signature Boiled Chicken is freshly prepared daily and served cold. Though I liked the roasted version, I honestly prefer the boiled version more.

We also had the Crispy Cereal Prawn (Php 655 for large, Php 375 for regular).

Crispy Cereal Prawn

I have tried Cereal Prawn before, but Boon Tong Kee's cereal coating is quite unique with almost a breading-like texture. These huge prawns are sure winners! :)

We were also served Coffee Pork Ribs (Php 295), Fried Spare Ribs with Zhen Jiang Sauce (Php 395) partnered with Sambal Fried Rice (Php 225).

As a coffee addict, I was expecting a lot from the Coffee Pork Ribs. However, it tasted sugary to me. We were suggested to try the Fried Spare Ribs with Zhen Jiang Sauce with the Sambal Fried Rice, and damn, it worked like magic!

As if our dinner wasn't filling enough, we were also served Birthday Noodles (Php 295). Interestingly, somebody in our table is celebrating his birthday. :P

New Dishes

We were also served some off-the-menu dishes like the Cream Cheese Prawn with Bun and Stir-Fried Lotus Plant with Vegetables.

With a hint of spiciness, the Cream Cheese Prawn wins my cheese-loving heart and my almost-full belly. All I know is I must get more. :)

Desserts

We ended our feast with Mango Taho and Sago Gula-Melaka with Vanilla Cream (Php 145).

It was a wonderful dinner at Boon Tong Kee. The servings were quite generous, so I suggest that you visit this place in groups, or with friends or family with huge appetites. The prices are reasonable, given the quality of the dishes and the service they provide. I'd honestly return here with my friends soon. :)

Thanks to Michael Rodriguez, Joy Rodriguez and Miguel Aranaz of Boon Tong Kee Philippines for having us.
