A Taste of Vietnam at Annam Noodle Bar

It's almost Christmas, and the cold weather is here again. What better way to relax amid the holiday stress and the traffic is to have a hot bowl of Pho and more delicious Vietnamese food.

My friend and I went to Eastwood a few days ago to dine at the recently opened Annam Noodle Bar by NamNam Singapore. NamNam Noodle Bar in Singaporewas founded by Chef Nam, a Vietnamese chef who has lived and worked in different parts of the world but has kept to his Vietnamese roots.

Annam Noodle Bar is proud to declare that the dishes they serve have no MSG, quick serve style to cater to people who are always on the go.

For starters, we had the Crispy Imperial Rolls (Php 200) and samples of Fresh Southern Rolls (Php 170) and Vegetarian Southern Rolls (Php 170).

The Crispy Imperial Rolls, with a mix of shrimp and pork fillings was absolutely delicious. I love the straightforward flavors combined with the crispiness of the wrapper and the slightly spicy dip that comes with it.

The Fresh Southern Rolls has prawn, pork, fresh herbs and peanut sauce. We liked both rolls, and really loved the thick peanut sauce as dips.

For drinks, we had the Viet Coffee with Condensed Milk (Php 120), served hot or iced, and Lychee-Pandan Iced Tea (Php 150).

As a coffee lover, I love how strong Vietnamese coffee is. I would love to ask for more condensed milk for their version though. For a palate cleansing drink, the Lychee-Pandan Iced Tea is a perfect choice.

For noodles, we were served the Pho Australian Beef Combination (Php 350) and Sauteed Lemongrass Pork Noodle (Php 320).

There are two main types of Pho: Hanoi pho and Saigon pho. Hanoi pho is known to have clearer broth compared to Saigon pho. Annam Noodle Bar serves Hanoi Pho.

We shared a bowl of Pho Australian Beef Combination which has beef steak slices, beef balls, tendon and honeycomb tripe. For dry noodles, we had the Sauteed Lemongrass Pork Noodle, served with fried imperial roll. I loved the herby flavors of the pho broth and the tenderness of the beef toppings but I was also impressed with the Sauteed Lemongrass Pork Noodle, which is delectable even without any condiment.

Annam also has a line of banh mis. We had Sauteed Lemongrass Pork Banh Mi (Php 250).

The Sauteed Lemongrass Pork Banh Mi is stuffed with hot chili peppers, pickled carrots, mayonnaise, daikon, cucumber, fresh cilantro and cream cheese. Biting through the toasted baguette was a challenge for me, but I liked the banh mi. I would love to have more cream cheese though.

For desserts, we had Chilled Dried Longan Dessert (Php 180) and Vanilla Pudding (Php 150).

The Chilled Dried Longan Dessert is similar to our very own halo-halo but with lotus seeds, water chestnut and seaweed. If you prefer something fruity than sweet, I recommend that you try this. But if you prefer something sweet, you'll love the Vanilla Pudding. Similar to leche flan, the Vanilla Pudding is somehow creamier and sweeter with palm sugar caramel. I love this!

Annam Noodle Bar also sells Vietnamese food items and condiments like the coffee beans, noodles, fish sauce and many others.

Annam Noodle Bar is an evidence that a delicious bowl of pho need not be expensive. I was quite astounded on how flavorful yet affordable the dishes we had in Annam. I will surely return for more.

Thanks to Annam Noodle Bar for having us.
