Latin American Delight at Sobremesa

The Sapphire Bloc, the newest building in the middle of Ortigas Center, has opened several restaurants that I was excited to visit. One of the newest restaurants is Sobremesa by Chef Benjo Tuason. Chef Benjo is the chef behind URBN BGC, Nest, Relik, and Salo.

Sobremesa, a Spanish term which means "on table", is a restaurant serving Latin American and Filipino dishes.

For appetizers, we had the Sweet Corn Fritters (Php 140) and Shrimp Ceviche (Php 250).

The Sweet Corn Fritters is served with a spicy marinara sauce that gives a balance of sweetness and spiciness as you bite apiece. I was impressed that the serving for Shrimp Ceviche is quite generous, I love the added veggies on it too. However, a bit more acid will make the dish better.

We also had the Calamari Salad (Php 280).

The Calamari Salad is served with salted egg, bell peppers, and mango & lime vinaigrette. The vinaigrette raised the bar in this dish. I would love to have this again.

For mains, we had the Peruvian Spiced Roasted Chicken (Php 380 for half, Php 700 for whole), Grilled Pork Belly (Php 440), both paired with Chorizo and Green Pea Fried Rice (Php 240).

The dish I liked the most was the Peruvian Spiced Roasted Chicken, served with three sauces: jalapeno and coriander, red pepper sauce, and garlic yogurt sauce. Though the chicken itself it already flavorful, I still loved pairing it with the garlic yogurt sauce. Another must-try dish is the Grilled Pork Belly, spiced marinated and served with garlic mashed potato and pineapple salsa. I wasn't too impressed with the fried rice because I think it needed one more ingredient, probably bell pepper or corn will make it better.

Currently on its soft opening, Sobremesa serves decent dishes. I was particularly impressed with the main dishes but other dishes can still be improved. The service was a bit too slow during our visit so I hope the next time I visit, it would be a lot better. I can't wait to try the cheesecake next.
