Asian Bites

As I've always mentioned in my previous blog posts, I'm not a fan of Japanese food. I'm not sure whether I just went to a not-so-good Japanese restaurant or I was just traumatized by a bad-tasting california maki a few years ago. But I'm a foodie, I got to try everything, so I went to Asian Bites to try some Japanese food.

Asian Bites is a restaurant under Robinson's Supermarket serving mainly Japanese food. It's an open area located in front of the supermarket so expect lots of people passing by. Most people eating there are usually people who had quick runs at the grocery during lunch time.

For my first visit, I ordered the Tonkatsu Bento (Php 169).

Miso Soup
Dalandan Juice
Tonkatsu Bento

Tonkatsu Bento is a complete meal with Pork Tonkatsu, 4 pcs of California Maki, Veggies and Miso Soup. They only offer Strawberry Iced Tea and Dalandan Juice, so I got the latter (Php 35 for 12oz). As I was using chopsticks to eat my bento, I found out that the rice was not sticky as I want it to be, however the tonkatsu was good enough. But I have to give emphasis to the California Maki, it was REALLY good! I loved that they used sweet ripe mango. As of this writing, I've tried california  maki from three other places (some are not even uramaki or "with rice on the outside, nori on the inside") but I'm really  particular with Asian Bites' version.

For my second visit, I got Beef Gyudon (Php 129)

Beef Gyudon

Beef Gyudon is a rice bowl with simmered beef strips, mushrooms, onions and bell peppers with a fresh egg yolk on top. I haven't tried a gyudon with a fresh egg yolk before, but it made the gyudon taste better. The beef is rather on the sweet side, which I prefer. And it's really tender too!

We also got to try Salmon Skin Maki (Php 49 for 4 pcs) and Double California Maki (Php 85 for 4 pcs)

Salmon Skin Maki
Double California Maki

The Double California Maki is almost the same thing as the one in the Bento meals except for the toppings, which made it taste a lot better. I regret that I did not order more. (haha). Salmon Skin Maki has salmon skin and cucumber, and it's quite crunchy. Both are good options for Lenten Fridays as both do not contain meat. :)

I love Asian Bites! I'll keep on coming back for the California Maki, but I'd love to try the various rice bowls and sushi on their menu.

And now I love Japanese food. :)

    1. Thanks Thirdy! I'm glad I gave Japanese food another try. Now I can't stop eating California maki.haha. :)

  2. I love beef gyudon, will probably visit this one of these days! Thank you for sharing this. Followed you! :)

    1. Thanks for dropping by, Yedy. I really appreciate it! :)

  3. Contrary to your not liking Japanese food (before coz now it seemed you change opinion alreayd and liking it), I am a big fan of it along with Korean dishes. Good thing my taste bud is I guess built for the Asian foodies..hehe!

Beef Gyudon entices me though I've eaten countless of it already way back. And I guess, every single photo you got here pwede kung kainin lahat..takaw mode lang.

I haven't visited any Japanese Resto here in KSA coz I don't know where to find one yet. But I'd love to explore ahead. Have tried Korean and Chinese resto here. Chinese Tandoori is a great resto here.

    1. I'm just starting to like Korean and Japanese food. Good thing because I don't want to limit myself (since I already have a lot of limitations.haha).

Thanks for appreciating my photos, I don't modify them so that's how the food really looks like. :) Hmm, where are you exactly in KSA? I guess there should be Japanese restos there since don't eat pork di ba? And Japanese is more into seafood. Hope you find one there soon. :)

  4. I love Japanese food, though I usually order Katsudon whenever I'm in a Japanese restaurant. So far, my favorite Katsudon is Sumosam's. :)

The Double California Maki from Asian Bites looks yummy. :P

    1. Woah, haven't tried Sumosam. Yep, it's really good. :)

  5. I love gyudon with raw egg! Yum! I should try this kaso lang ang layo. Hope they have other branches.

    1. Hi stacy! It has a branch in Robinson's Place Ermita. :)

  6. I am glad you can appreciate Jap food now. I love the cuisine myself. :)

    1. Thanks Mrs.A. It's like overcoming your fear.haha. :)

  7. At last your starting to like Japanese food already :D I'm a super big fan of Jap cuisine that I think I can live eating Japanese dishes every day.. :)) Try visiting Little Tokyo too.. :D I've heard they have the most authentic Japanese dishes you can find in the Metro.. :)

    1. Have you been to Little Tokyo? :) The food club members are raving about it. :)

  8. I'm not also a a fan of japanese food. But this place makes me wanna go and try their food.
