Oriang by Cafe de Bonifacio

Note: This restaurant is already closed.

It's been almost a year since I visited Cafe de Bonifacio in Podium. As much as I love trying other cuisines, Filipino food would always be home. I was extremely amazed at how they turned traditional Filipino dishes into modern and world-class food.

I was even more ecstatic when they recently opened Oriang at The Fort.

Oriang is named after Andres Bonifacio's better half, Gregoria de Jesus. Serving popular dishes from Cafe de Bonifacio, Oriang also has new modern Filipino dishes with the help of Chef John Cu-unjieng.

The resto is quite spacious, with both indoor and al fresco dining areas, and decorated with modern Filipino designs with photos of their signature dishes on the walls. Oriang has a bar that serves original house cocktails and other alcoholic beverages.

Appetizers

As soon as we were seated, we were given complimentary appetizer: some sort of crackers with pesto.

We also had my favorite, Lumpiang Hubad in Pastry Cups (Php 135) and Gambas al Ajillio (Php 275).

Gambas al Ajillio

Their modern version of Lumpiang Hubad never fails to get me. I love it so much I think I could finish 2 plates of this alone. :) Also, I liked the Gambas al Ajillio, a very simple yet flavorful dish. It's partly deshelled too, which makes it easier to eat.

Main Dishes

For the main dishes, we had Binagoongang Bagnet (Php 185) and the hardcore, Nilagang Bulalo (Php 325).

Nilagang Bulalo

I'm not much into binagoongan, but I liked their version a lot that I almost forgot about rice. Hands down to the tenderness of the Nilagang Bulalo, I think everyone in our group loved it so much. It is indeed one of the dishes you have to try at Oriang.

We partnered these dishes with their bestseller, Oriang Super Fried Rice (Php 215).

Oriang Super Fried Rice

This specialty rice is sauteed in taba ng talangka (or aligue), loads of garlic with grilled liempo strips, and Vigan longganisa. One can just have this alone and still be happy. A serving is good for 2-3 persons.

Desserts

You shouldn't leave this place without getting desserts, and I'm sincerely telling you this as a huge dessert fanatic.

My friends got to try Ginumis (Php 85), one of Cafe de Bonifacio's bestselling desserts too.

Ginumis

Ginumis is a medley of sago and gulaman in coconut cream topped with roasted rice crisps. It's perfect, especially this coming summer season.

We also had Turon de Gregoria (Php 85) and Leche Flan Coffee (Php 70).

Leche Flan Coffee

Turon de Gregoria is a modern twist to our favorite meryenda. It looks so simple, but after trying to do my own version at home, I wouldn't dare to call this dessert simple. I love adding the ice cream on top of it. Leche Flan Coffee is something else too. The texture is a bit tough because of the coffee mixed in, but the creaminess and milkiness go really well with the coffee flavor. The coffee didn't overwhelm the dessert but actually made it taste a lot better. Another must-try at Oriang.

Aside from the dishes we had, Oriang also serves hot plate sizzlers, grilled dishes, and other Pinoy favorites. Though I'm not into alcohol, I'm curious about their cocktails drinks like Mabuhay, Rum-dam, Andres de Tagay, and Watawat. Group meals are also available.

Until March 14, 2013, Oriang offers a 10% discount on all items, so I hope you'll grab the promo.

Oriang offers really delicious Filipino food for everyone without burning a hole in your pockets, proves that Filipino dishes can really go global. I hope Oriang and Cafe de Bonifacio opens up more locations soon.

Thanks to Jael Wenceslao for having us.
